The biggest change for free users is not just the model name
OpenAI announced on August 6, 2026 that GPT-5.6 Luna would become the default model for Free and Go users. The update also expands everyday text-chat access and adds a Think control for questions where more reasoning is useful.
That changes how the free plan feels in normal use. Instead of treating every longer conversation as something to ration, users can keep refining a text-based task across multiple turns. Abuse-prevention safeguards still apply, so “unlimited” should not be read as a promise that automated or abusive usage has no guardrails.
What Think is for
Think uses GPT-5.6 Luna for Free and Go users. It is meant for harder questions where a little more reasoning time can improve the result: comparing several options, analyzing a long set of constraints, planning a multi-step task or checking a tricky conclusion.
For a quick rewrite, definition or simple factual question, leaving Think off is usually more efficient. The point is not to turn it on for every message; it is a convenient way to tell ChatGPT that the current question deserves a deeper pass.
Unlimited text does not remove every other limit
This is the part most likely to cause confusion. OpenAI’s help material says separate limits still apply to file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools. A free user may therefore continue chatting in text while temporarily being unable to upload another file or generate another image.
When a tool is limited, look at the message shown in ChatGPT for the relevant reset or plan information. Do not assume that a screenshot from another user reflects your account, because rollouts and allowances can differ by plan and feature.
How Luna differs from GPT-5.6 Sol
Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna. Paid plans can have access to GPT-5.6 Sol and reasoning controls that are not part of the Free/Go model setup. For most everyday users, the practical difference is less about memorizing model labels and more about whether the plan provides the reasoning level, tools and usage allowances needed for the work.
If your main use is writing, brainstorming, planning and normal question-and-answer chat, try the new free experience before paying only because the model name changed. If your workload relies heavily on files, images, data analysis or higher reasoning allowances, those plan differences still matter.
If the new controls are not visible yet
OpenAI described the change as a rollout. That means two accounts can temporarily show different controls. Refresh the web app, update the mobile app and check again rather than assuming the account is broken.
