Moved in Canada? Use this practical checklist to update your CRA, Service Canada, IRCC, voter registration, passport, and mail-forwarding information.
After a move, the most important thing to know is that there is no single federal address-change form for everything. The Canada Revenue Agency, Service Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Elections Canada, and provincial governments maintain separate records.
That means changing your address with the CRA will not automatically update an immigration application, an Employment Insurance file, your health card, or your driver’s licence. The federal government specifically advises people to update each department or agency that has their information.
The easiest approach is to work through the accounts that can affect money, legal documents, or deadlines first. Then handle voting, provincial identification, mail forwarding, and private companies.
Your CRA address can affect tax correspondence, notices of assessment, the Canada Child Benefit, GST/HST credit payments, direct deposit records, and other tax-related benefits. Update it as soon as possible rather than waiting until you file your next tax return.
The fastest option is CRA My Account. After signing in, choose your individual account, open Profile, select Contact information, and edit your address. The CRA says online address changes are updated immediately after submission.
If you cannot sign in, you can update the information by phone after confirming your identity. Have your Social Insurance Number, full name, date of birth, complete address, and a recent tax document or notice of assessment available.
Update your address in CRA My Account
Update each family member’s information separately when necessary. You generally cannot change another adult’s CRA address through your own account unless you are their legal representative or follow the CRA’s authorization process.
Service Canada handles several programs that may send payments or important letters, but the update method depends on the benefit.
If you receive Old Age Security or the Canadian Dental Care Plan, you may be able to update your personal information through My Service Canada Account. Sign in, select the relevant benefit from your dashboard, and look for the personal-information or contact-information options.
For Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, and Canada Disability Benefit information, Service Canada currently directs recipients to request a callback, visit an office, or contact the appropriate call centre. These programs cannot all be updated through MSCA in the same way, so do not assume that changing one MSCA profile field completes every update.
Review Service Canada address-update options
Keep identification available if you contact Service Canada. You may need to answer identity-verification questions or show government-issued identification when using an in-person service.
If you have an application in progress with IRCC, treat the address change as urgent. This includes many permanent residence, citizenship, temporary residence, work permit, study permit, visitor visa, and permanent resident card applications.
The correct process depends on what you applied for, where you submitted it, and whether you applied online or on paper. Some applicants can use IRCC’s online Change of Address service. Others must use the IRCC web form or update contact details inside the IRCC Portal.
IRCC says you should keep checking your old address until the change is processed because correspondence may still be sent there. Some services can take up to two weeks to display updated contact information.
Update your address or contact information with IRCC
Have your application number, Unique Client Identifier, old address, new address, and updated phone or email information ready. If you are unsure which route applies, use IRCC’s contact-information page rather than submitting the same request through multiple channels.
Moving does not automatically update every address connected to your identity documents. You should separately review your federal voter registration, provincial or territorial health card, driver’s licence, vehicle registration, and provincial voter registration where applicable.
Elections Canada’s Online Voter Registration Service lets eligible voters check their registration and update their address. If you have moved recently, the service may ask you to enter your old address first so it can locate your existing record.
Check or update your Elections Canada address
Updating your Elections Canada address does not update your driver’s licence agency. Contact your province or territory directly for health-card and driver-licence rules, deadlines, fees, and accepted identification. These requirements vary across Canada.
If you are moving between provinces, check whether your new province has a waiting period or special process for health coverage. Do not cancel or surrender your old health card until you understand the transition rules for both provinces.
A change of address does not invalidate a valid Canadian passport. If you still have room on the address page, IRCC says you can cross out the old address and write the new one. If there is not enough room, write the new address on a separate piece of paper and keep it with the passport.
This is different from an active passport application or an immigration application. For those, update your contact information through the relevant IRCC process so documents are mailed to the correct place.

Canada Post Mail Forwarding can redirect eligible mail from a Canadian address to a new address in Canada, the United States, or many international destinations. A longer forwarding period can help catch annual tax documents, renewal notices, and financial statements.
Mail forwarding is useful during the transition, but it does not change the sender’s records. Parcels and some types of mail are not forwarded, and you remain responsible for telling government departments, businesses, and people who send you important documents.
Keep a short record of the date you updated each account and save confirmation numbers or screenshots where available. That makes it much easier to follow up if a payment, notice, card, or application letter still goes to your old address.
A. No. CRA, Service Canada, IRCC, Elections Canada, and provincial agencies use separate records. You must update each organization that has your address.
A. The CRA says an online change through My Account is updated immediately after you submit it. Phone updates are also processed immediately after you reach an agent and complete identity verification.
A. Yes, if you have an active application, benefit, tax account, licence, health record, or other service tied to your address. Keeping records current can prevent missed notices, delayed documents, or problems verifying your identity later.
A. No. Mail Forwarding helps redirect eligible mail, but parcels and some other items are excluded. It also does not update the sender’s records, so contact each government department, company, employer, and service provider directly.
