How to Put Your USPS Mail on Hold: Online Steps, Timing, Limits, and Pickup Options

Learn how to pause USPS mail safely while traveling, including online identity verification, timing cutoffs, package limits, cancellation, pickup, and Canada alternatives.

  • USPS Hold Mail is free and pauses all letters and packages for an eligible U.S. address for 3 to 30 days.
  • Online requests require a USPS.com account and identity verification; same-day starts depend on the USPS cutoff time.
  • At the end of the hold, USPS can deliver the accumulated mail or let you pick it up at your local Post Office.

What USPS Hold Mail does

USPS Hold Mail is the safest option when you’re leaving your U.S. home for a few days or weeks and don’t want mail piling up in the mailbox. The service pauses delivery of all mail for the address, including letters and packages, and stores it at the local Post Office until the hold ends.

The service is free and can last from a minimum of 3 days to a maximum of 30 days. You can usually submit a request up to 30 days before the start date, or request the next scheduled delivery day if you’re leaving soon.

USPS Hold Mail is not a way to stop just one package or a single piece of mail. If you’re expecting one shipment, use a package-specific option such as Hold For Pickup or Delivery Instructions instead.

U.S. eligibility, timing, and important limits

USPS Hold Mail applies to eligible U.S. delivery addresses and covers everyone at that address. Online availability isn’t guaranteed for every address, so the service may require an in-person request at your local Post Office.

ItemCurrent USPS rule
CostFree
Minimum hold3 days
Maximum hold30 days
Advance schedulingUp to 30 days before the start date
Mail coveredAll mail delivered to the address, including packages
Longer absencesUse a forwarding service rather than repeating short holds

For an online request to begin on the requested postal business day, USPS currently lists a cutoff of 3 a.m. Eastern Time, 2 a.m. Central Time, or midnight Pacific Time, Monday through Saturday. Postal holidays can affect the next available delivery day. If you submit after the cutoff, the earliest start date may be the next scheduled delivery day.

How to submit a USPS Hold Mail request online

The online process is straightforward, but identity verification is now part of the request. Have your delivery address, travel dates, and a working email address ready before you begin.

Submit a USPS Hold Mail request online
  1. Create or sign in to your USPS.com account.
  2. Open the USPS Hold Mail service page and enter the address where mail should be held.
  3. Complete the identity-verification steps shown on screen.
  4. Choose the start and end dates for the hold.
  5. Select whether USPS should deliver the accumulated mail or hold it for you to pick up.
  6. Submit the request and save the confirmation number or confirmation email.

If USPS can’t verify your identity online, the application may offer a mailed verification code. USPS says that code is sent by First-Class Mail and generally arrives within 3 to 5 business days. You can also visit the local Post Office and complete PS Form 8076, Authorization to Hold Mail.

Other ways to request the hold

If online submission isn’t available for your address, you can request Hold Mail in person, submit the authorization form through the approved local process, or call 1-800-ASK-USPS. Requests made in person or by phone generally need to be accepted by the local Post Office or Customer Care Center’s closing time to take effect by the next delivery day.

What happens to packages during a mail hold?

A valid USPS Hold Mail request covers packages addressed to the held address, but it doesn’t let you select one package while regular mail continues. USPS holds the incoming mail according to the instructions in your request.

If you’re ordering something after you’ve already left, it’s still wise to track the shipment. Some delivery options, signature requirements, sender restrictions, or timing issues may require a separate solution. For a single package, the sender or recipient may be able to use Hold For Pickup, Delivery Instructions, or Package Intercept, depending on eligibility.

Use USPS Package Intercept Review USPS Delivery Instructions Review USPS Hold For Pickup

Do not assume that a mail hold changes the package’s delivery address. It only affects delivery handling for the address covered by the request.

How mail is returned when the hold ends

When you create the request, you choose between two basic options:

  • Carrier delivery: USPS delivers the accumulated mail on the last day of the hold. If it won’t fit in the mailbox, the carrier leaves a PS Form 3849 notice and returns the overflow to the Post Office for pickup.
  • Post Office pickup: You collect the accumulated mail at the designated Post Office. Bring an acceptable form of identification. USPS says held mail selected for pickup must be collected within 10 days or it may be returned to the senders.

If you pick up the mail before the original end date, USPS automatically cancels the hold and regular delivery resumes on the next postal business day. If you choose carrier delivery and aren’t home, only the amount that fits safely in the mail receptacle can be left there.

You may authorize another person to pick up the held mail, but USPS requires written permission and acceptable identification from the person collecting it.

How to change or cancel USPS Hold Mail

Keep the confirmation number. For online or phone requests, USPS sends the confirmation by email when a valid email address is provided, and the message includes a link for managing the request.

With the confirmation number, you can generally edit, change, or cancel the request through the confirmation link or by contacting USPS. Without it, changes are more limited. You may need to visit the local Post Office with acceptable identification, or call the local Post Office if you’re still away.

Be especially careful if you’re also filing a Change of Address. USPS says a later Change of Address request overrides the Hold Mail request, and held mail will be forwarded under the change-of-address order.

Canada Post customers: use a different service

USPS Hold Mail is for U.S. addresses. If your home is in Canada, use Canada Post’s separate Hold Mail service instead.

Canada Post requires an account for online purchases, and its service has different rules. It generally requires advance planning, does not hold parcels, and delivers the held mail on the next business day after the service expires or is canceled. Mail pickup during the hold period isn’t available at a Canada Post location.

Common mistakes to avoid before you leave

  • Waiting until the last minute: Online cutoff times and identity verification can prevent a same-day start.
  • Holding mail for too long: USPS Hold Mail ends after 30 days. Use forwarding for a longer absence.
  • Forgetting the confirmation number: You may need it to make changes while traveling.
  • Assuming every address qualifies online: Some addresses require an in-person request.
  • Ignoring incoming deliveries: A hold does not cancel orders or change an item’s shipping address.
  • Using an unofficial website: Start with the official USPS Hold Mail page and avoid lookalike sites asking for unnecessary payment or personal information.

Before leaving, submit the request through the official USPS service, confirm the dates, save the confirmation number, and decide whether you want delivery or Post Office pickup when the hold ends.
