Canada PR and citizenship processing times: September 2026 update

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada updated its permanent residence and citizenship processing-time estimates on September 3, 2026. The latest figures show a mixed picture: some family sponsorship categories improved, while the Federal Skilled Worker Program and overseas spousal sponsorship outside Quebec became slower.

These are estimates, not guaranteed deadlines. IRCC says the time starts when it receives a complete application and ends when it makes a decision. Missing documents, extra background checks, security screening, a complicated family situation or a request for more information can all add time.

For applicants in the United States, the main distinction is whether you’re applying from outside Canada or planning to settle in Quebec. A U.S. applicant sponsoring a spouse who lives in the United States generally falls under the “outside Canada” family-class category, not the in-Canada category.

Canada PR and Citizenship Processing Times Update: September 2026 Wait Times - Current permanent residence processing times

Current permanent residence processing times

Express Entry

Express Entry remains one of the faster routes to Canadian permanent residence, although not every stream is moving at the same pace.

Program September 3, 2026 estimate Previous estimate
Canadian Experience Class 6 months 6 months
Federal Skilled Worker Program 7 months 6 months
Federal Skilled Trades Program Not available Not available

The Federal Skilled Worker estimate increased by one month from the August update. IRCC does not publish a separate Federal Skilled Trades estimate because there isn’t enough data for a reliable figure.

The published service standard for Express Entry is six months, but that standard is not a promise that every application will be finalized within six months.

Provincial Nominee Programs

PNP category Current estimate
PNP through Express Entry 7 months
Non-Express Entry PNP 13 months

The enhanced, Express Entry-linked PNP estimate stayed at 7 months. The base, non-Express Entry PNP estimate remained much longer at 13 months.

Applicants in the base PNP stream should also review the current rules for bridging open work permits. A temporary measure introduced on June 9, 2026, may allow some eligible applicants to apply before receiving an acknowledgement of receipt for their permanent residence application.

Other economic immigration programs

Program Current estimate
Atlantic Immigration Program 26 months
Quebec Skilled Worker Selection Program 11 months
Quebec Business Class 75 months
Start-Up Visa Program More than 10 years
Federal Self-Employed Persons Program More than 10 years

The Atlantic Immigration Program estimate has remained at 26 months for several monthly updates. The Start-Up Visa and Federal Self-Employed Persons estimates continue to exceed 10 years, making them among the longest waits listed by IRCC.

Family sponsorship processing times

Family-class wait times depend heavily on whether the sponsored person lives in Canada, outside Canada or intends to settle in Quebec.

Applicants settling outside Quebec

Application type September 3, 2026 Previous estimate
Spouse or common-law partner living in Canada 26 months 27 months
Spouse or common-law partner living outside Canada 18 months 17 months
Parents and Grandparents Program 28 months 29 months

For U.S. applicants, the most relevant figure is usually the 18-month estimate for a spouse or common-law partner living outside Canada. That category increased by one month in the September update.

In-Canada spousal sponsorship improved by one month to 26 months. The Parents and Grandparents Program also improved by one month to 28 months.

Applicants settling in Quebec

Application type Current estimate
Spouse or common-law partner living in Canada 32 months
Spouse or common-law partner living outside Canada 33 months
Parents and Grandparents Program 63 months

Quebec-bound applications are substantially slower in several categories. The Parents and Grandparents estimate is 63 months, or just over five years. Quebec also has its own immigration selection process, which can affect the overall timeline before IRCC completes the federal stage.

Canadian citizenship processing times

The standard citizenship grant estimate stayed at 12 months in the September update. This applies to the naturalization process for eligible permanent residents who apply to become Canadian citizens.

Citizenship service Current estimate
Grant of citizenship 12 months
Renunciation of citizenship 4 months
Search of citizenship records 18 months
Proof of Canadian citizenship certificate 33 months

The 33-month estimate for a proof of citizenship certificate is separate from the 12-month citizenship grant estimate. A citizenship certificate is generally used by people who are already Canadian citizens, often because they were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent or became citizens under citizenship-by-descent rules.

This distinction matters. A permanent resident applying to naturalize should look at the citizenship grant timeline. Someone trying to document existing citizenship should look at the proof-of-citizenship timeline instead.

How to check your application status

Once you receive an acknowledgement of receipt, you can check your file through the IRCC secure account or the Client Application Status tool. The online status service is updated daily.

  1. Find your UCI and application number in your acknowledgement of receipt letter or email.
  2. Open the IRCC application status service or sign in to your secure account.
  3. Review messages, document requests, biometrics information and status changes.
  4. Respond by the deadline if IRCC asks for additional documents or information.

If you applied online, the submission confirmation email is not necessarily the same as an acknowledgement of receipt. IRCC must first check that the application is complete. Paper applicants should keep their delivery confirmation and wait for the acknowledgement of receipt before trying to track the application online.

What to do if your application is taking longer

First, compare your application with the current IRCC estimate for the exact program and location. Don’t compare an Express Entry estimate with a family sponsorship estimate, or a citizenship grant with a citizenship certificate.

If the normal processing time has passed, use the IRCC web form to provide important updates or ask about a case-specific issue. Include your application number, UCI, full name, date of birth and a clear explanation.

Keep your contact information current. Report changes such as a new address, email address, phone number, marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, job change or updated language-test result. Calling IRCC generally won’t speed up processing, and an agent may not be able to provide a more precise completion date.

Finally, treat the published number as a planning estimate rather than a deadline. IRCC updates forward-looking estimates based on inventory, expected applications and available processing capacity, so the number can rise or fall from one update to the next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the current Canada citizenship processing time in September 2026?

A. The current estimate for a grant of Canadian citizenship is 12 months. That is different from a proof-of-citizenship certificate, which has a separate 33-month estimate.

Q. How long does Express Entry permanent residence take right now?

A. The Canadian Experience Class is estimated at 6 months, while the Federal Skilled Worker Program is estimated at 7 months. IRCC does not publish a separate estimate for the Federal Skilled Trades Program because there is not enough data.

Q. Does applying from the United States count as applying outside Canada?

A. Yes. For most family sponsorship categories, a spouse or partner living in the United States is treated as living outside Canada. The relevant September 2026 estimate for an overseas spouse or common-law partner settling outside Quebec is 18 months.

Q. Can an IRCC application finish faster than the posted processing time?

A. Yes. Processing times are estimates based on recent or projected processing patterns, not minimum waiting periods or guarantees. A complete, routine application may finish sooner, while additional screening or missing information can make it take longer.
