The Office of the United States Trade Representative, or USTR, has announced its Spring 2027 internship schedule. The program is an unpaid volunteer opportunity for students, recent graduates, and qualifying veterans who want practical experience in U.S. trade policy.
The Spring 2027 session is scheduled to run from January 25 through May 14, 2027. Applications are scheduled to open on October 5, 2026, and close on October 16, 2026. USTR says it will accept a maximum of 100 applications for each session, so waiting until the final day could create an unnecessary risk if the limit is reached earlier.
Internship work may include research and analysis, compiling statistics, preparing reports and briefing materials, helping with meetings and conferences, drafting correspondence, and attending meetings, hearings, or legislative markup sessions. Opportunities are available across most departments in USTR’s Washington, D.C., office.
Important: This is not a remote internship. USTR says selected interns must work on-site, and the agency does not provide living accommodations or relocation assistance. It does offer a transportation subsidy to help offset local commuting costs.

The schedule matters if you’re taking classes, working another job, or relying on academic credit. USTR supports academic-credit arrangements when a student’s school has its own credit program, but it does not arrange the credit itself. You’ll need to confirm the requirements with your college or university.
Applicants must meet the basic USTR conditions below:
The qualifying routes are:
For the Spring 2027 session, the first day is January 25, 2027. If you’re relying on the recent-graduate or veteran route, compare your graduation or active-duty timeline with that date rather than with the application deadline.
USTR also notes that men born after December 31, 1959, who are at least 18 generally must be registered with the Selective Service System unless an exemption applies. Selectees must also complete a confidential pre-employment security questionnaire. USTR describes itself as a drug-free workplace and says recent or current drug use is not acceptable.

The official USTR application coversheet shows the type of information applicants should have available. Preparing it in advance can make the short application window much easier to manage.
Download the official USTR application coversheet
The coversheet lists areas such as China Affairs, Congressional Affairs, General Counsel, Public and Media Affairs, Trade Policy and Economics, Western Hemisphere, and WTO and Multilateral Affairs. Choose areas that genuinely match your coursework, research interests, language skills, or career goals. A focused application is more useful than selecting every office without explanation.
Because the current USTR page does not publish a complete document checklist for Spring 2027, it’s sensible to have an updated resume and a concise cover letter ready as well. In the cover letter, explain your availability, preferred schedule, relevant coursework or experience, and why USTR’s trade-policy work interests you. Do not claim that a writing sample is required unless the application instructions specifically request one.
USTR’s application period is not open on September 20, 2026. The official application destination is scheduled to accept Spring 2027 submissions beginning October 5.
Review the official USTR Internship Program page
When the window opens, use the following process:
The application portal is the correct submission route for the Spring 2027 session. Older USTR pages and archived documents may describe earlier email, fax, or seasonal procedures, so don’t rely on those instructions for this application cycle.
USTR’s public internship page does not provide a guaranteed decision date, interview schedule, or standardized status-check process for Spring 2027. That means applicants should keep their submission confirmation and monitor the email address used in the application.
If a USTR office is interested in your background, the next step may involve additional communication or an interview. Be ready to discuss your availability, academic interests, writing or research experience, and ability to work in person. Selection is not guaranteed simply because an applicant meets the minimum eligibility rules.
Before accepting an offer, clarify the expected weekly schedule, office assignment, start and end dates, academic-credit paperwork, security-screening requirements, and transportation arrangements. Since the internship is unpaid and relocation assistance is not provided, Washington, D.C., housing and living costs should be part of your decision.
Not under the eligibility rules currently posted by USTR. The program requires applicants to be U.S. citizens.
No. USTR says selected interns must work on-site at its Washington, D.C., office and that remote and telework options are not available.
The program is unpaid. USTR does offer a transportation subsidy, but applicants should not assume that it covers housing, relocation, or all commuting expenses.
The current schedule lists October 16, 2026, as the closing date, while the 100-application limit could make the practical deadline earlier. If you miss the window, review the USTR internship page for a later session rather than using an old archived application process.
Before October 5, confirm that you meet the citizenship, age, education or veteran, schedule, and Washington, D.C., work requirements. Then prepare your resume, cover letter, availability details, and application information so you can submit promptly through the official portal when the Spring 2027 window opens.
