| – An AI PC includes an NPU designed to handle repeated AI workloads efficiently alongside the CPU and GPU. – Copilot+ PC eligibility depends on more than NPU performance, including memory, storage, processor platform, and the supported Windows environment. – For basic web and office work, display, keyboard, battery, and memory may matter more; NPU value rises when you regularly use local AI, live translation, video effects, and supported creative apps. |
Nearly every laptop product page in 2026 highlights the phrase AI PC. The label alone, however, does not reveal real performance or whether the features will matter to you.
A smart purchase starts by checking whether your actual applications use the NPU and whether the CPU, GPU, memory, storage, cooling, and battery form a balanced system. The largest TOPS number is not automatically the best laptop.

The CPU is a general-purpose processor, while the GPU excels at graphics and highly parallel calculations. An NPU is designed to run repeated AI operations such as speech recognition, background blur, translation, and image processing with lower power use.
TOPS estimates the number of operations a processor can perform per second, but a higher number does not make every application proportionally faster. Model format, memory bandwidth, software optimization, cooling, and power limits all matter.
Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC category requires a qualifying NPU as well as at least 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and a supported Windows 11 platform. Think of the label as a baseline for selected on-device AI features, not a guarantee that every workload will be fast.
For web browsing and documents, the logo is not essential. If you plan to use live captions, translation, camera effects, photo editing, and local AI features for several years, broader platform support may be valuable.
No single component determines the feel of a laptop. Use these priorities to narrow a shortlist.
Two laptops carrying the same AI PC label can differ greatly in ports, upgrade options, battery life, and compatibility.
If your current laptop is fast enough and causes no meaningful frustration, the AI label alone is not a reason to replace it. Priorities may also shift if you work mainly in a browser or remote desktop, your essential software does not use an NPU, or a similarly priced conventional model offers a better display, more memory, or a stronger GPU.
AI features change quickly. Judge the computer by functions available today rather than features promised for an unspecified future date.
Q. If one NPU has twice the TOPS, is it twice as fast?
A. Not necessarily. Software optimization, memory, model size, thermal limits, and power settings can change real performance.
Q. Is a gaming laptop also an AI PC?
A. It may be marketed as one if it includes an NPU, but gaming performance is still driven mainly by the GPU and cooling system.
Q. Is software compatibility good on ARM laptops?
A. It has improved significantly, but older drivers, certain plugins, and specialized hardware still require an official compatibility check.
