  • The SSHRC Insight Grants October 2026 competition closes October 1, 2026, at 8 p.m. Eastern, with results expected in April 2027.
  • Stream A supports requests from $10,000 to $125,000, while Stream B covers $125,001 to $500,000 over two to five years.
  • Applicants should begin early because the proposal, budget, research contributions, team forms, and institutional approval all need to be complete before submission.

SSHRC Insight Grants 2026: Competition status and deadline

The October 2026 SSHRC Insight Grants competition is open for preparation, with applications due by October 1, 2026, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. SSHRC says results are expected in April 2027.

Insight Grants support research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. Projects may be led by an individual researcher or a research team, and the grant period must run from two to five years. The program is designed for both emerging and established scholars whose projects can make a meaningful contribution to knowledge.

The deadline is the same for both funding streams, and both streams go through the same application process and rigorous merit review. SSHRC indicates that the targeted success rate is higher for Stream A than for Stream B, but neither stream guarantees funding.

Practical timing tip: October 1 is SSHRC’s deadline, not necessarily your university’s deadline. Your institution will usually require an earlier internal submission date so a research administrator can review and forward the application.

How much funding is available?

The total grant value can reach $500,000 over two to five years. SSHRC also requires a minimum request of $10,000 in at least one year, while no more than $125,000 can be requested in a single year.

StreamTotal requestProject lengthBest fit
Stream A$10,000 to $125,0002 to 5 yearsSmaller or more focused research initiatives
Stream B$125,001 to $500,0002 to 5 yearsLarger, multi-year or team-based projects

The stream should reflect the amount of funding the project genuinely needs. Choosing Stream B simply because it offers a higher ceiling can create a weaker budget if the proposed activities do not justify the request. SSHRC’s review process emphasizes the relationship between the research plan, the timeline, the team, and the requested costs.

Who is eligible for an SSHRC Insight Grant?

Most applicants, including co-applicants, must be affiliated with an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution when they apply and before any funding is released. The institution must also be able to administer SSHRC funds.

Postdoctoral fellows may apply, but a successful fellow must establish a formal affiliation with an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution within five months of the grant start date and maintain that affiliation throughout the grant. PhD candidates may also be eligible if they complete all PhD requirements, including the successful defence, before the grant is awarded and establish the required Canadian institutional affiliation.

Students who are still enrolled in a program of study and do not meet the PhD-candidate conditions are not eligible to apply as the main applicant. Collaborators have different rules: they can contribute significantly to a project without being affiliated with an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution.

Important eligibility checks

  • The proposed research must fall within SSHRC’s social sciences and humanities mandate.
  • Projects primarily focused on curriculum development, program evaluation, teaching materials, conferences, workshops, collection digitization, or database creation are not eligible as the main purpose of the grant.
  • An application may be declared ineligible if 30% or more of the requested budget is assigned to ineligible expenses.
  • Applicants with an overdue SSHRC achievement report cannot apply for another SSHRC grant until the report is submitted.
  • An individual can apply as the applicant for only one Insight Grant at a time.

A February 2026 Insight Development Grant application that was unsuccessful does not prevent the researcher from applying for an Insight Grant in October 2026. Someone applying for an Insight Grant in October 2026 may also apply for an Insight Development Grant in February 2027, as long as the research objectives are significantly different.

What must be included in the application?

The application is more than a research proposal. SSHRC’s instructions require several connected pieces, and a missing attachment or unverified participant can delay or prevent submission.

Core proposal materials

  • Summary of proposal: A plain-language explanation of the issue, contribution to knowledge, and broader potential benefit. The maximum is one page.
  • Detailed description: A maximum six-page section covering objectives, context, literature and theoretical approach, and methodology.
  • Knowledge mobilization plan: A maximum one-page explanation of how research findings will reach appropriate academic and non-academic audiences.
  • References or bibliography: A list of works cited or discussed, with a maximum of 10 pages.
  • Expected outcomes: The likely scholarly, social, professional, policy, or community benefits of the project.
  • Research team, previous output and student training: A maximum four-page section describing roles, relevant results, and training plans.
  • Research contributions: The applicant and co-applicants must provide the required information about research contributions, including relevant work from the last six years.
  • Funds requested and budget justification: The numbers should match the activities, staffing, timeline, and institutional rates.

Additional material may be required for research-creation proposals, interdisciplinary review requests, joint initiatives, impact assessment, or research that falls under the Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern policy.

How to choose between Stream A and Stream B

Stream A is for requests from $10,000 through $125,000. Stream B begins at $125,001 and goes up to $500,000. The dividing line is based on the total amount requested, not the amount requested in each individual year.

A useful way to decide is to build the project budget first. Identify the people, research activities, travel, equipment or software, participant-related costs, knowledge mobilization, and student training that are genuinely necessary. Then spread those costs over the proposed two-to-five-year timeline.

Stream B may make sense for a larger team, extensive fieldwork, substantial data collection, or a multi-stage project with significant training and knowledge mobilization. Stream A may be more appropriate for a focused project with a smaller team and a narrower set of activities. SSHRC says the streams receive the same level of rigorous review, so the choice should be driven by the project’s needs rather than the appearance of a larger award.

How to apply for the October 2026 competition

SSHRC uses its online application and CV system for Insight Grants. The application is completed online, but most applicants must submit it to an authorized research grants officer or equivalent at their institution for approval and forwarding to SSHRC. Eligible PhD students and postdoctoral fellows may submit directly to SSHRC under the program rules.

  1. Create or access your SSHRC online account and start the Insight Grants October 2026 application.
  2. Choose Stream A or Stream B based on the total amount your project requires.
  3. Select the most appropriate merit review committee. If you request multi/interdisciplinary review, include the required justification.
  4. Add co-applicants and collaborators early. Each invited participant must complete and verify the appropriate invitation form, and co-applicants must provide the required SSHRC CV material.
  5. Complete the proposal, budget, team, outcomes, knowledge mobilization, references, and research contributions sections.
  6. Attach PDFs that meet SSHRC’s page, margin, font, and file-size rules. Review each uploaded file to make sure it is complete and opens correctly.
  7. Run the verification process and correct every issue until the Verification Report confirms that the application is verified.
  8. Select Submit to research administrator before your institution’s internal deadline. The institutional administrator must forward the application to SSHRC by October 1 at 8 p.m. Eastern.

SSHRC’s online system assigns an application number after receipt. Keep that number for future correspondence. Applications remain available for download through the online system for 30 days after the deadline, after which they are deleted.

What reviewers will look for

Insight Grant applications are assessed under three main criteria:

CriterionWeightWhat it covers
Challenge40%Originality, significance, contribution to knowledge, methods, training, and potential influence
Feasibility20%Timeline, team expertise, budget, contributions, and knowledge mobilization
Capability40%Research record, outputs, knowledge mobilization, and student training experience

Applications must receive at least 3.0 on each criterion to be recommended for funding. That makes balance important: an original idea still needs a credible work plan, and an experienced team still needs a clear research question and well-supported methodology.

Reviewers may include external assessors and members of the Insight Grant merit review committees. SSHRC normally seeks at least two external assessments but cannot guarantee that number for every application.

What to prepare before the deadline

Start with the parts that depend on other people. Confirm your institution’s internal deadline, ask co-applicants to update their CVs, invite collaborators, and determine whether ethics, impact assessment, research-creation, interdisciplinary, or sensitive-technology documents apply.

Next, create a one-page project summary and a realistic budget. Those two pieces often expose unclear objectives or activities that do not fit the proposed timeline. Make sure the knowledge mobilization plan names the audiences you want to reach, how you will engage them, and when those activities will happen.

Finally, leave time for verification and institutional review. The safest next step is to open the official competition instructions, confirm your eligibility, and contact your university research office well before October 1, 2026.
