Canada’s online passport renewal service is now open to all eligible adults in Canada. Check eligibility, photo rules, timing, cancellation risks, and how to apply.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced on July 28, 2026, that online passport renewal is now available to all eligible adult Canadians applying from Canada. The expansion removes the previous limit on how many people could use the online service.
The online option lets eligible applicants submit their renewal application, digital photo, and payment through the IRCC Portal instead of mailing documents or visiting a Service Canada location. It’s convenient, but it isn’t the right choice for every traveler. The eligibility rules are narrower than the rules for renewing in person or by mail.
Online renewals are available only when both your home address and mailing address are in Canada. The government also doesn’t currently deliver passports renewed online outside Canada, so Canadians living in the United States or another country need to use the application process for that location.

Before creating an account, make sure every condition below applies to you. Missing even one requirement can mean you need to apply in person or by mail instead.
You also can’t use online renewal to report a found passport that was previously lost or stolen but hasn’t been returned to the government.
Online renewal is not suitable if you need to change your name or other personal information, if your last passport was a child passport, or if your passport was issued more than 15 years ago. In those situations, you’ll need to apply for a new adult passport rather than use the simplified renewal process.
Travel timing is the biggest practical issue. Don’t apply online if you’re travelling within the next 20 business days. Processing can take up to 20 business days, and mailing may add about five more business days. Because your current passport is cancelled as soon as you apply, you could be left without a valid passport while waiting.

An online renewal requires a digital passport photo. The photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer, be no more than six months old when you apply, and must not be a scanned copy of a printed passport photo.
The image also needs to meet Canada’s passport standards for lighting, focus, background, facial expression, and positioning. A practical tip is to ask the photographer for both the digital file and a printed copy. The digital version gives you the online option, while the printed photos give you flexibility if you later need to apply by mail or in person.
Review the official Canadian passport photo requirements before your photo session.
Review Canadian passport photo requirements
If you meet the eligibility rules and have your digital photo ready, the process is straightforward:
Use the official portal rather than a third-party service or a search advertisement. The government’s passport renewal page is the safest starting point if you want to review the requirements before signing in.

Your current passport is cancelled after you submit an online renewal application. It won’t remain valid while the new passport is being processed, even if the expiry date printed inside it has not yet arrived.
This is why the 20-business-day travel rule matters. If your trip is sooner, apply in person and ask about the available regular, 10-business-day, express, or urgent service options. Availability can vary by location, and faster service may require an in-person visit and additional fees.
Online renewals have a service standard of up to 20 business days, not including mailing time. Once the new passport is ready, delivery usually takes about five business days, although mailing time can vary across Canada.
The service standard is not a guaranteed delivery date. Applications may take longer if information is missing, a photo needs to be replaced, or additional checks are required. It’s best not to finalize travel plans until you have the new passport.
You can monitor an online renewal through the IRCC Portal, where status updates are shown in real time.
Check the status of your online passport renewal
If your passport meets the conditions, your trip is at least 20 business days away plus mailing time, and you have a compliant digital photo, online renewal can save you a trip to Service Canada. If your travel date is closer, your personal information has changed, or your passport doesn’t meet the online rules, use the in-person or mail-in process instead.
A. Not through the Canadian online renewal service described here. Online renewals are currently available only when your home and mailing addresses are in Canada. Canadians applying from the United States must use the applicable U.S.-based passport process.
